Easy but Tricky Verbal Test Questions
After taking verbal reasoning test, many candidates realise just how easy some of the questions are. Indeed, not all of the questions are meant to be difficult but surely the easiest questions may be the trickiest ones. Following section provides short extract from verbal reasoning test and reviews how to answer easy but tricky questions. Good luck with your preparation.
How to answer tricky verbal questions
For the following take no longer than 30 seconds to read the text passage and mark the below statement as true, false or cannot say. If you are new to this concept please read chapter on how to answer verbal reasoning questions. This chapter provides in depth explanations with examples when to mark the statement as true, false or cannot say.
Production of biomass will increase next year.
The above question may trick number of candidates to agree to the fact that indeed next year there will be an increase of biomass production. However, the passage only states that production is likely to double over the next ten years. From this we only know that there is likelihood that production will double over the next decade but we do not know when this increase will take place – will the production of biomass start to increase from the year one? Or will it be increasing from year two or year three…etc. Hence the correct answer to the above question must be cannot say as there is not enough information provided to conclude the above statement to be true neither false.
Read relevant information carefully
At verbal reasoning test it is critical that you pay attention to information provided. Read the below statement and based on the facts provided in the text mark your answer.
It may be inferred from the passage that biomass has multiple use.
If you read the first sentence of the passage carefully you can conclude that indeed biomass has multiple use. Though, the text does not state directly that biomass has multiple use it states that biomass is a versatile energy source and hence you can conclude that it has multiple usage. Thus, the correct answer to the above question must be true. However, many candidates may read the text superficially and not notice this and answer the questions incorrectly. Therefore, at verbal reasoning test you need to pay attention to wording and fine details when marking the statement. To review more examples refer to basics of verbal reasoning tests which will give you greater exposure to the types of questions in verbal aptitude tests.
Don't spend too much time on one answer
Now have a go at the last statement. Please read it carefully and attempt to mark it accordingly.
Biomass technologies are more common than wind and solar technologies because they can generate electricity at any time.
The correct answer to the above statement is obviously cannot say. Why? Because we cannot find any supporting evidence that would indicate that biomass technologies are more commonly used than wind and solar technologies. For example, a number of candidates may assume that if biomass technologies can generate electricity at any time then they must be more commonly used then wind and solar technologies as wind and solar technologies generate electricity only when wind is blowing or sun is shining. However, based on the information offered in the extract it would be tedious to conclude the above. Hence the correct answer must be cannot say as there is not enough information provided to conclude the statement to be true neither false.
